African Lake's Iconic Birds are Vanishing
From the Associated Press, November 16, 2006: A combination of deforestation, drought, rising temperatures, and pollution threaten to undermine the population of pink flamingos in the Lake Nakuru region of Kenya, as their primary food source, algae, is diminishing due to drastically decreasing water levels in the lake. The birds, which once numbered in the millions only six years ago, have been reduced to an estimated 30,000 today.
