The Complexities of Aid Distribution in Africa: The Ogaden Case, Ethiopia
From The New York Times, 21 July, 2007 - "Ethiopia is Said to Block Food Aid to Rebel Region: The Ethiopian government is blockading emergency food aid and choking off trade to large swaths of a remote region in the eastern part of the country that is home to a rebel force, putting hundreds of thousands of people at risk of starvation, Western diplomats and humanitarian officials say."
The article illustrates the complexity of aid donations to developing countries, where funds often face substantial barriers prior to distribution in areas with highest demand. The Ogaden region of Ethiopia is home to several nomadic and pastoral clans, who over the course of the conflict have faced increasing threats to food security and livelihoods, due to disrupted marketing channels and increasing food prices.
