GL-CRSP News Article - A Case for New Institutions

A Case for New Institutions

Science magazine recently featured an editorial by Kamiljit Bawa, Ganesan Balachander, and Peter Raven entitled "A Case for New Institutions" (11 January 2008, Vol 319 Science). In it, the authors review the historical context of university institutional development, and conclude that today's universities in the developing world are ill suited to address indigenous social, economic, and technological challenges. The authors call for an overhaul of existing university structure centered around a "problem-driven approach," ensuring the flexibility, adaptability, and experimental focus required for the highly varied local situations and uncertainties faced in the developing world.

The Problem Model focus has been central to the structure of the Global Livestock CRSP for over a decade. The CRSP defines the problem model as a detailed description of a development problem that both defines the problem and the underlying processes that produce it. Problem models in GL-CRSP projects are accompanied by a description of relevant literature and important individuals active in the field related to the problem model. The concept is to make the problem the focus of the project and to make the solution of the problem the force that structures the project’s team composition and activities. Projects are then rated and evaluated on the quality of their problem model and how well their team and activities address it. For more on the GL-CRSP program structure please visit:
