Two-thirds of those currently living with HIV reside in African countries. To that end, human welfare and nutrition represent an important theme in the GL-CRSP portfolio, especially where they relate to AIDS, malnutrition, and women and children in Africa. Based on evidence that deficiencies of certain nutrients may hasten HIV disease progression, the GL-CRSP HNP project (HIV Nutrition Project) is determining the effects of animal source foods (ASF) on the health and nutritional well being of women living with HIV in the Turbo division of Uasin Gishu District in Kenya. HNP is also investigating the effects of ASF on the growth, health and cognitive development of their vulnerable children. Though not dealing with AIDS directly but addressing the severity of childhood malnutrition in Africa, the ENAM project (Enhancing Child Nutrition through Animal Source Food Management) is intended to improve the current poor feeding practices and inadequate diet quality that contribute to childhood malnutrition in targeted communities in Ghana. A micro-credit program for mothers of children between two and five years of age is also part of ENAM to encourage economic growth along with nutritional education.
